Police are generally pleased with how the New Year period went despite arresting seven people.

A 25-year-old male from Arorangi was found to be driving while disqualified last Friday morning – January 1- during a traffic blitz in front of Empire Theatre. He was bailed and will appear in court on January 14.

A 37-year-old Arorangi man was arrested for excess breath alcohol on Friday afternoon. He lost control near the intersection at Pokoinu Road, missed the power pole and fell off his bike in the nearby pawpaw plantation. When tested, he returned an alcohol breath result of 570mg. The legal limit is 400mg. He was released on bail and is due to appear in court on January 14.

A 36-year-old man was arrested for being unlawfully found inside a home in Tikioki on New Year’s day. He was discovered carrying a bush knife.

Police said the Titikaveka man has a history of unsound mind and is being held in custody to appear in court this week.

A 32-year-old male was arrested for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend on Friday afternoon. Police said alcohol was involved. The Panama man will appear in court this week.

Two Ngatangiia men were arrested for breaching their curfew conditions. Both will face charges in court this week.

An Arorangi man was arrested on Saturday afternoon for excess breath alcohol. The 44-year-old was stopped on the back road of Arorangi and returned a result of 710mg. He was also found with a small amount of cannabis. He will face an excess breath alcohol charge in court this week with a possession of cannabis charge likely to be laid.

A home on the back road of Matavera was broken into on Friday morning. The resident reported the burglary when she returned home from her New Year celebrations.

Items stolen include a silver Apple Macbook laptop, two iPods with charger and headphones, an Iomega external hardrive, a black MP3 voice recorder and a black Phillips electric laser.

The woman has very important work in the computer from 12 years of research and writing.

Thieves are also targeting motorcycles parked on beaches with property taken from underneath a seat on Wednesday in Titikaveka. A silver digital camera was stolen.

Inspector Tere Patia said despite police warning tourists by handing out pamphlets when they sit their driver’s licence, people appear to be ignoring the message.

“(We have warned) not to leave valuables such as money, camera, iPods, mobile phones or jewellery under the seat of motorcycles when parked at beaches or other areas,” he said.

“Thieves are also known to target electronic items and cash.”
