The descendents of Paara and Tearuru Maoate have spent five fun-filled days enjoying each other’s company during their family reunion this past week.
More than 50 members were based at the Enua Manea Hall representing the six children of Paara and Tearuru (nee Tione).
Grandson of the couple, Pari Karika said family travelled from as far as New Zealand and Australia to attend the reunion.
“It’s mainly for the young ones so they can get to know everyone,” he said.
“It unites everyone together especially for our children, there’s always a new generation,” another family member added.
Commencing on Boxing Day, the family was divided into four groups which were allocated duties.
The organised activities during the week included land and marae tours, lagoon cruises, quiz night, studying genealogy, basket weaving and attending services at the Ngatangiia CICC church.
The day always started with morning devotion and five minutes of aerobics.
The 2009 reunion has been in the planning since the last one was held three years ago.
It was moved to the Enua Manea Hall this year from the Paara Maoate family home to accommodate the increase in numbers.
Emile John was one of the many children who enjoyed being around his many cousins, aunties, uncles and grandparents.
“It was awesome,” the 12-year-old summed up.
The reunion wrapped up on Wednesday night.

Team Audit won the New Year’s one-day mixed basketball tournament held at the Telecom Sports Arena last Monday.
Audit defeated Pacific Sharks (Divers) 20-12 in the final of the eight-team competition, with the A team and 88FM having to settle for third and fourth respectively. Audit collected $200 for its efforts, Pacific Sharks $100, and the A Team earned $50 for the day’s play.
Cook Islands Basketball Association president George Williams, aka GDub, said that having people come along, creating the right hype, and getting the code off to a good start in 2010, were the objectives of the annual tournament.
A couple of novelty events were held during the day, with Ephraim Anselmo winning the ‘half way’ shoot, and Anthony ‘Pecan’ Ikimotu taking out the slam-dunk comp.
A week’s rental for a Golf convertible vehicle from Budget was up for grabs for the first person who could successfully shoot a basket from half way.
But the shooters, who were picked randomly from the crowd, were unable to find the hoop, and the shooting mark was moved progressively towards the hoop.
In the end Anselmo was the first person to score a ‘three pointer’ from just outside the shooting circle and he won himself one day’s rental of the car. Ikimotu won $50 for his dunk at a basket which was lowered a foot from the normal 10-foot high hoop..
Williams, who was elected as the association’s new president last month, said that they hope to kick start the season for men and women’s teams next month. He also hopes the season will expand to include a college and/or schools competition.
Williams said that he would like to thank Turtles, Budget, Pacific Spring, General Transport, Cook Islands News and 88FM, for their sponsorship and/or assistance in the lead-up to the one-day tournament.
